What really happens inside a pediatric cancer hospital after the exam room door closes?
Most people only see a small part of a child’s cancer journey. They see the appointments, the chemotherapy infusions, and maybe the celebration when treatment ends. But the nurses who care for these children every day witness a very different side of the story.
In this episode, Season Johnson sits down with pediatric oncology nurse Savannah Cruz for an honest conversation about what life is truly like inside a children’s cancer hospital. Having spent years caring for children undergoing chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants, Savannah shares the realities families rarely hear about—and why those experiences ultimately led her toward functional medicine.
One of the biggest topics they explore is nutrition during treatment. While hospitals understandably prioritize calories and maintaining weight, Savannah explains why food quality still matters and how whole-food nutrition may help support the body’s ability to recover, tolerate treatment, and heal alongside conventional cancer therapies.
The conversation also explores many of the hidden environmental stressors present during long hospital stays. Artificial lighting, synthetic bedding, harsh cleaning chemicals, processed hospital food, and limited access to fresh meals all contribute to the overall burden placed on a child’s body during treatment. Savannah offers simple, practical ideas families can implement—from bringing their own bedding and nourishing foods to creating a more comforting healing environment inside the hospital room.
Another powerful part of the discussion centers around parent advocacy. Many families feel intimidated when asking questions or exploring complementary therapies alongside conventional treatment. Savannah shares practical advice for communicating with healthcare providers while remaining an active member of the care team, emphasizing that parents know their children better than anyone else.
Throughout the episode, both Season and Savannah reinforce an important message: conventional medicine and functional medicine are not enemies. Pediatric oncology saves lives every day, while functional medicine can often provide additional support through nutrition, detoxification, lifestyle strategies, emotional health, and personalized care.
This conversation offers hope without false promises, practical strategies without fear, and a compassionate reminder that families have more tools available than they may realize.
