Nuts make a wonderful snack. They are a satisfying addition to yogurt or salad and a practical option for busy, on-the-go families. But most people skip one critical step before eating them. They need to be properly prepared. For families navigating childhood cancer, knowing how to soak nuts for digestion is not just helpful. It is genuinely essential.
Nuts, seeds, and grains all contain phytic acid. This anti-nutrient binds to essential minerals like zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron. It then pulls them out of the body before your child can absorb them. Many people call this “nutrient robbery,” and for a child already under the enormous stress of cancer treatment, losing those minerals is a serious problem.
Phytic acid also makes nuts hard to digest. Cancer treatment already compromises a child’s digestive system. Chemotherapy and radiation damage the gut lining. They wipe out beneficial bacteria and push the immune system to its limits. When you add hard-to-digest foods into that environment, you increase gut inflammation, reduce nutrient absorption, and put even more strain on an already struggling system.
Learning how to soak nuts for digestion is one of the most practical things you can do to protect your child’s gut right now.

Weston A. Price studied traditional cultures around the world. He found that the healthiest populations all had one thing in common. They prepared their grains, nuts, and seeds before eating them. Soaking, sprouting, and fermenting were not food trends. They were standard practice, passed down through generations because people experienced real results.
Price observed that these communities had strong digestion, high mineral status, and remarkable physical resilience. For cancer families, this is not just history. It is a practical and powerful guide for what your child’s body needs today.
Soaking nuts in water neutralizes phytic acid. Adding a small amount of sea salt or an acidic medium like whey or raw apple cider vinegar speeds up this process. Soaking also activates beneficial enzymes and allows lactobacillus and other organisms to break down the compounds that cause digestive problems.
The result is a much more bioavailable nut. Your child’s body can now absorb the nutrients inside instead of losing them. For kids in active treatment or recovery, better nutrient absorption supports energy levels, immune resilience, gut integrity, and healing.
Soaking also reduces the workload on a compromised digestive system. Less inflammation, better food tolerance, and a calmer gut all help the body focus on what matters most: healing. When you soak nuts for digestion, you turn a simple snack into something that actively supports your child’s recovery.
One of my FAVORITE recipes to use these nourishing nuts in is my homemade granola!
Soaking nuts takes very little hands-on time. Once you build it into your weekly routine, it becomes second nature. Many families prep a large batch at the start of the week and keep them on hand for quick snacks and easy meal additions.
Here are the simple instructions for how to soak nuts for digestion the right way:
Step 1: Choose Your Nuts
Start with raw, organic nuts. Avoid roasted or salted nuts, as heat and processing destroy the enzymes you are trying to activate.
Step 2: Measure Your Salt and Water
Place your nuts in a large glass or stainless steel bowl. Cover them with warm filtered water. Add one teaspoon of sea salt per four cups of nuts. The salt helps neutralize enzyme inhibitors and supports the activation process.
Step 3: Soak Overnight
Leave the nuts to soak at room temperature. Different nuts require different soaking times. Here is a simple guide:
Step 4: Rinse Well
Drain and rinse the nuts thoroughly with fresh filtered water. You will likely notice the water looks murky. That is the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors leaving the nut.
Step 5: Dehydrate Low and Slow
Spread the nuts in a single layer on a dehydrator tray or a baking sheet. Low-temperature drying preserves the enzymes you just activated. Use a dehydrator set to 105 to 115 degrees F. If using an oven, set it to the lowest possible temperature with the door slightly cracked. Dry for 12 to 24 hours until the nuts are completely crisp and dry. We have had this dehydrator for over a decade and it works amazing. We also use it for homemade jerky and dried fruit!

Step 6: Store Properly
Store your finished nuts in a glass jar with a tight lid. Keep them at room temperature for up to one month or in the freezer for longer storage.
