I know the fear and helplessness you're feeling—but I'm here to show you there's so much more you can do to help your child thrive. From one cancer parent to another: I'm here to show you your child can do more than just survive treatment.
I'm Season Johnson

Every child deserves an ice cream moment. Even in the middle of cancer treatment. Especially in the middle of cancer treatment.
If your child is dairy free, lactose intolerant, or simply cannot tolerate conventional ice cream during treatment, I have good news for you. These dairy free ice cream recipes for kids with cancer are not just tolerable alternatives. They are genuinely delicious, deeply nourishing, and secretly packed with the kind of healing ingredients a cancer kid’s body actually needs.
Before I share the recipes let me give you a quick explanation of why conventional ice cream is so problematic, because understanding the why makes the swap feel less like deprivation and more like the upgrade it truly is.
Conventional ice cream combines two things that are particularly hard on a compromised digestive system: lactose, which is the naturally occurring sugar in milk, and added refined sugar used to sweeten it. For a child whose gut lining is damaged by chemotherapy, whose beneficial bacteria have been wiped out by treatment, and whose immune system is already working overtime, this combination creates a significant digestive burden.
Interestingly, many people who struggle with dairy can still tolerate butter and hard cheeses without any problem. This is because those foods contain little to no lactose. The trouble with ice cream is the double sugar hit, lactose plus refined sugar, landing in a gut that is simply not equipped to handle it during treatment.
The good news is that all three of these recipes contain zero refined sugar, zero lactose, and zero dairy. What they do contain is healthy fat, natural sweetness, anti-inflammatory compounds, and a surprising amount of nutrition that you can boost even further with a few simple additions. More on that below.
This is one of my favorite parts of making homemade frozen treats for cancer kids. The base recipes are already nourishing. However, they are also the perfect vehicle for sneaking in additional support without your child ever knowing.
Here are some of my favorite nutrient additions to stir or blend into any of these recipes:
Open a capsule of your child’s daily probiotic and blend it in. The cold temperature of ice cream protects the beneficial bacteria beautifully and this is one of the easiest ways to get probiotics into a child who resists taking supplements.
Add a capsule of your organ meat supplement like Paleovalley Grass-Fed Organ Complex blended into the chocolate recipes. The cacao flavor masks it completely and you are delivering liver, heart, and kidney support in every bite.
Stir in a scoop of Lineage AB protein powder in chocolate flavor to boost protein content, which is critical for tissue repair during treatment.
Add a teaspoon of raw honey for its antimicrobial and enzyme-rich properties alongside its natural sweetness.
Add a pinch of sea salt to every recipe. It enhances flavor and delivers trace minerals that are depleted by chemotherapy.
None of these additions change the taste in any meaningful way. Your child gets to eat ice cream and their body gets exactly what it needs. That is a win worth celebrating.
This is the closest to traditional ice cream of the three. Rich, creamy, and completely dairy free. You will need an ice cream maker for this one and it is absolutely worth it.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer until fully combined and slightly frothy. Turn on your ice cream maker and slowly pour the mixture in. Follow your machine’s instructions for churning time. Serve immediately for a soft serve consistency or transfer to a glass container and freeze for two hours for a firmer scoop. Top with fresh organic berries or Enjoy Life chocolate chips.
The egg yolks in this recipe are doing more than you might expect. Pasture-raised egg yolks are one of the richest sources of choline, fat-soluble vitamins, and healthy fat available. For a child experiencing cognitive effects from chemotherapy, choline is direct nutritional support for brain health. Do not skip the yolks.

No ice cream maker needed. No cooking required. Just a blender and five minutes. This one is a favorite for clinic days when you need something quick, nourishing, and mood-lifting.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
Place all ingredients in a high speed blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth and creamy. Serve immediately for a soft, mousse-like consistency or transfer to a glass container and freeze for one hour for a scoopable texture. Top with fresh organic berries and chocolate chips.
The avocado in this recipe delivers a remarkable amount of healthy monounsaturated fat, potassium, folate, and B vitamins. The cacao provides magnesium, iron, and flavonoids with documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This is one of the most nutrient-dense frozen treats you will ever serve your child and it tastes like chocolate ice cream. That combination is hard to beat.
This is the newest addition to our rotation and it has quickly become a family favorite. The golden milk base, built around turmeric and ginger, delivers powerful anti-inflammatory support in every scoop. It is warm in flavor, naturally sweetened, and beautiful in color.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl until fully combined. Taste and adjust sweetness with additional honey if desired. Pour into your ice cream maker and churn according to machine instructions, or pour into a glass loaf pan and freeze for four to six hours, stirring every 45 minutes for a creamier texture. Serve topped with a drizzle of raw honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Turmeric is one of the most well-researched anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer compounds in the natural world. Its active component curcumin has been studied extensively for its ability to inhibit cancer cell growth, reduce treatment-related inflammation, and support liver detoxification. Adding black pepper increases curcumin absorption by up to 2,000 percent. Serving it in a fat-rich coconut milk base further enhances absorption since curcumin is fat-soluble. This recipe is quietly doing serious work while your child thinks they are just eating ice cream.
All three of these recipes store well in glass containers in the freezer for up to two weeks. Remove them from the freezer five to ten minutes before serving to allow them to soften to a scoopable consistency.
If you are looking for more grain-free, refined sugar-free dessert recipes that your cancer kid will actually eat, our dessert recipe collection includes dairy-free, egg-free, and nut-free options to cover every dietary need and sensitivity.
You are not alone. I am so proud of you for showing up for your child in this way.

So I never paid attention and just took the name at face value. Pure vanilla. Some of them actually contain alcohol?
Sadly, yes!
Can I substitute ghee for coconut butter in the chocolate ice cream recipe?
Hi Erin – I haven’t tried it, but I’m not sure it would work. If you try it, let me know how it goes. 🙂 Thanks!
