I know the fear and helplessness you're feeling—but I'm here to show you there's so much more you can do to help your child thrive. From one cancer parent to another: I'm here to show you your child can do more than just survive treatment.
I'm Season Johnson
I want to tell you about a moment in a surgery room that I still think about years later.
It was a cold October afternoon. Kicker was about to go under anesthesia for one of his many lumbar punctures, the procedure where chemotherapy is injected directly into his spine. None of us had eaten or drunk anything. We were exhausted and anxious in the particular way that only cancer parents understand, the kind of tired that lives in your bones.
As we got settled in the surgery room, one of the nurses turned to me with a consent form and asked if she could give Kicker the flu shot while he was already under anesthesia. It would be painless, she said. He would not even know it happened.
I looked at her and said no. Clearly. Without hesitation.
And then, in the two seconds after that answer left my mouth, I became quietly terrified.
Even with all of my education and research, the doubt crept in immediately. What if he got the flu and ended up back in the hospital in worse condition? Imagine if I was wrong?
I had to remind myself of something I tell cancer families every single day. We can only do the best we can with what we know. At the end of the day, peace about a decision matters as much as the decision itself. I reminded myself and Josh of all the research that had led us to that moment of clarity. And I held my no.
I am sharing this with you because this question, whether to give a child with cancer the flu shot, is one of the most common and most emotionally charged questions I receive. And you deserve a thorough, honest, research-informed answer rather than a reflexive one in either direction.
Let me steelman the case for the flu shot in a cancer patient before I tell you why I ultimately chose differently for Kicker.
It is absolutely true that children undergoing chemotherapy have a significantly compromised immune system. Chemotherapy suppresses the Absolute Neutrophil Count, the measure of the immune system’s frontline soldiers, which makes a child more vulnerable to viruses including influenza. A cancer child who contracts the flu can face serious complications that a healthy child would easily clear.
The conventional medical argument is that a compromised immune system needs every protective layer available. I understand that argument. I respect the oncologists and nurses who make it. They are trying to protect your child and their concern is genuine. But the only know one way to do that.
Here is where my concern lies and why I arrived at a different conclusion.
Before making any decision about an injection going into your child’s body, you deserve to know exactly what that injection contains. Here is the documented ingredient list for flu vaccines:
Aluminum salts are added as adjuvants to stimulate a stronger immune response. Aluminum is a known neurotoxin that accumulates in the brain and has been associated with neurological damage. For a child whose brain is already potentially affected by chemotherapy drugs, adding aluminum is not a risk I was willing to accept.
Antibiotics are added to prevent bacterial contamination during vaccine production. For a child whose gut microbiome is already devastated by chemotherapy-related antibiotic use, adding more antibiotic exposure suppresses the very beneficial bacteria that are essential for immune function and gut healing.
Formaldehyde is used to inactivate viruses and bacteria during production. It is a known carcinogen. The fact that most of it is removed before packaging does not mean all of it is removed. For a child fighting cancer, any additional carcinogen exposure is categorically unacceptable.
Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, is used in multi-dose flu vaccine vials. Mercury is one of the most potent neurotoxins known to science. It bioaccumulates in the body and is extraordinarily difficult to eliminate, particularly through detox pathways that are already burdened by chemotherapy. If a mercury-free single-dose vial is not specifically requested and confirmed, your child may receive thimerosal.
MSG and 2-Phenoxyethanol are used as stabilizers. MSG is a neurotoxin that disrupts the blood-brain barrier and neurological function. For a child experiencing cognitive effects from chemotherapy, this is a meaningful concern.
Egg protein is present in most influenza vaccines prepared using chicken eggs. For children with egg sensitivities, which are common in cancer kids with compromised gut integrity, this can trigger immune reactions.
Beyond the ingredient concerns, there is a fundamental question about whether the flu shot is actually effective enough to justify those risks.
The CDC tracks flu vaccine effectiveness annually. In multiple recent seasons the vaccine has demonstrated effectiveness rates between 10 and 30 percent, meaning the majority of people who receive it are not protected against the strains circulating that year. In some seasons the effectiveness has been even lower.
I want to be direct about this. A vaccine that contains aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, and antibiotics and demonstrates 10 to 30 percent effectiveness in a healthy population is being asked to do significant work in a child whose immune system is already suppressed by cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs. The risk to benefit ratio in that specific context looked very different to me than it does in a healthy child.
The common side effects documented by the CDC include soreness, headache, fever, nausea, muscle aches, and fainting. Other side effects include Guillain-Barre Syndrome, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, swelling around the eyes or lips, hives, paleness, and weakness.
For a child already managing the side effects of aggressive chemotherapy, I was not willing to add a layer of risk for a protection rate that I could not call reliable.
Saying no to the flu shot did not mean sitting back and hoping for the best. It meant committing even more intentionally to building and maintaining Kicker’s immune function through every tool available to us.
Throughout his entire 3.5 years of chemotherapy, Kicker maintained an Absolute Neutrophil Count of 4,000 with the exception of the most intensive phase of treatment called Delayed Intensification. His oncology team could not explain it. I can. It was real food, targeted supplementation, daily detox practices, essential oils, and a clean environment. Every single day without exception.
Here is exactly how we did it and how you can apply these same tools for your child.
This is the single most impactful dietary change you can make for immune function and I cannot emphasize it strongly enough.
Research shows that consuming a meal high in glucose, including refined carbohydrates like pasta, bread, pizza, and sugar in all its forms, suppresses immune system function to approximately half its normal capacity for up to five hours afterward. Other research has demonstrated immune suppression lasting up to 24 hours from a single high-glucose meal.
Your child cannot afford to have their immune system operating at half capacity for five to twenty-four hours every single day because of what they are eating. This is not a minor dietary preference. It is a fundamental intervention.
Remove all refined sugar, processed grains, and conventional packaged foods from your healing kitchen. Replace them with the nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory whole food options we cover extensively on this blog and on the Thrive Through and Beyond Cancer podcast.
2. Drink Bone Broth Every Single Day
Quality bone broth contains 19 essential amino acids including arginine, which is specifically necessary for immune system and liver function. The bone marrow drawn out during the long cooking process delivers lipids including alkylglycerols that are vital for the production of white blood cells, the very cells chemotherapy suppresses most aggressively.
One cup per day is a meaningful and accessible daily immune support practice. Cook it from bones sourced from Wild Pastures for the cleanest possible source. If making your own feels overwhelming right now, Flavor Chef is a trusted pre-made option. Use the link https://affiliates.theflavorcheif.com/707.html and code SEASON10 for 10% off.

3. Eat One Serving of Fermented Food Every Single Day
Over 80 to 90 percent of your child’s immune system lives in their gut. Chemotherapy devastates the gut microbiome. Rebuilding it through daily fermented foods is one of the most direct and effective immune-rebuilding strategies available.
Introduce small amounts of truly fermented foods daily. Organic raw sauerkraut, raw kefir from grass-fed dairy, whole milk yogurt from pasture-raised animals, and traditionally fermented vegetables are all excellent options. Start with a teaspoon alongside a meal and increase gradually as your child’s gut adjusts.
A gut environment rich with beneficial bacteria is a gut environment with a strong immune response. The two are inseparable. Feed the good bacteria every single day.
4. Use Essential Oils Consistently and Strategically
Essential oils were a non-negotiable part of Kicker’s daily immune protocol throughout his entire treatment and I credit them as a significant contributor to his extraordinary immune resilience.
I only recommend and use doTERRA essential oils because of their rigorous batch testing that guarantees no synthetics, no chemicals, and no inappropriate sourcing. Poor quality oils can be contraindicated with chemotherapy. doTERRA oils are not.
Our immune roller blend applied to the bottoms of the feet and the thymus daily contains eight drops each of Frankincense, Lemon, OnGuard, Oregano, and Tea Tree in fractionated coconut oil. This is the exact blend we used with Kicker throughout his treatment. Apply it every single morning without exception and again in the evening during cold and flu season or any time of elevated exposure risk.
You can purchase doTERRA oils through our referral link for 25% off.
5. Reduce Stress Every Single Day with Intention
The American Medical Association has documented that stress is responsible for more than 60 percent of all disease. When the body is under chronic stress it produces cortisol, a hormone that directly suppresses immune function. For a cancer family carrying the specific and relentless stress of treatment, appointments, fear, grief, and uncertainty, this is not a minor concern.
You cannot eliminate stress during cancer treatment. However you can build consistent daily practices that interrupt the stress response and give your nervous system permission to shift into the parasympathetic state where healing actually happens.
My personal non-negotiables for stress reduction include daily prayer, intentional laughter, practicing forgiveness rather than letting resentment accumulate, and physical intimacy with my spouse. These are not fluffy suggestions. They are physiologically meaningful practices that shift the hormonal environment in your body and support the immune function that keeps your child safer.
Choose one stress reduction practice today and do it consistently. Then add another. The compounding effect over time is remarkable.
I am not telling you what to decide about the flu shot for your child. That decision belongs to you, made in full consultation with your medical team and your own informed conscience.
What I am telling you is that you have the right to ask questions. You have the right to read ingredient lists. You are allowed to look at effectiveness data. Saying no with confidence when a decision does not align with the research you have done and the peace you need to have, is your right.
And I am telling you that saying no to one intervention does not mean doing nothing. It means doing something better, more consistently, and with more intention than a single annual injection ever could.
Kicker’s ANC of 4,000 throughout 3.5 years of chemotherapy is not a lucky outcome. It is what intentional, daily, real food and integrative immune support looks like when applied consistently.
That is available to your child too.
You are not alone. I am so proud of you for showing up for your child in this way.

Love this!! Thanks so much for sharing!
My husband died in February 2017. He had lung cancer. He had been taking chemo and radiation. His doctor at the VA said to not give him the flu shot and for me not to take it either and to stay away from anyone who had just taken it. They wouldn’t explain it but said not to get it. I used oils on him everyday and he never got sick. He eventually died because the radiation finally ruined his lungs. I haven’t gotten the flu shot since.
Hi Cathy – Thanks so much for sharing, and I’m so very sorry for your loss!! Prayers to you and your family, especially during this holiday season!!
