I know the fear and helplessness you're feeling—but I'm here to show you there's so much more you can do to help your child thrive. From one cancer parent to another: I'm here to show you your child can do more than just survive treatment.
I'm Season Johnson

When Kicker was diagnosed with Leukemia, one of the first things I learned was that Benzene, a common household toxin found in plastics, dyes, detergents, and pesticides, has a direct and documented link to Leukemia.
I remember standing in our home looking around at everything we owned and thinking, what else is in here that I do not know about?
The answer was deeply unsettling. The average home contains between 500 and 1,000 toxic chemicals. Most of them are invisible and odorless. Many are not disclosed on any label. And the research is clear that common household toxins wreak havoc on the immune system, nervous system, and reproductive system of every person living inside that home, especially children whose smaller bodies and developing systems are far more vulnerable to toxic exposure than adults.
It is not new science that the majority of cancer diagnoses are linked to environmental toxin exposure. What is new for most families is the understanding that a significant portion of that exposure is happening inside their own home every single day.
Knowing how to detox your home for kids with cancer is one of the most important and most actionable things you can do alongside your child’s medical protocol. And unlike so much of what happens in a cancer treatment journey, this is entirely within your control.
Let me walk you through exactly where the most significant toxins are hiding and what to do about them.
Before we talk about solutions, I want you to understand what you are actually dealing with. Here are the ten most common household toxins and where they are most likely present in your home right now:
Perchlorate is found in drinking water, soil, and some conventional produce. Oxybenzone is found in skin moisturizers, lip balm, and sunscreens. Fluoride is found in tap water and conventional toothpaste. Decabromodiphenyl Ether is found in furniture, carpet, and electronics. Phthalates are found in toys, vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and detergents. Butylated Hydroxyanisole is found in gum, snack foods, and body lotions. Perfluorooctanoic Acid is found in non-stick cookware and tap water. Asbestos is found in older insulation, drywall, and some building materials. Bisphenol A is found in water bottles, plastic wrap, and food packaging. Parabens are found in makeup, hair care products, lotions, and shaving creams.
I am not sharing this list to overwhelm you. I am sharing it because you deserve to know what your child is being exposed to in the place where they are supposed to be safest.
And here is the truth I hold onto when this feels like too much. You do not have to fix everything at once. Do the best you can with what you have. Start with the highest-impact changes first and build from there. Every single swap you make reduces your child’s daily toxic burden and gives their healing body more resources to direct toward recovery.
This is the highest-priority change I recommend to every cancer family and the one I want you to start with before anything else.
Your child drinks water every day. They bathe in it. They breathe the steam from it. The quality of that water is not a minor detail. It is foundational.
Municipal tap water contains chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, pharmaceutical residues, heavy metals, and agricultural runoff. Chlorine and chloramines kill beneficial bacteria in the gut the same way they kill pathogens, adding to the microbiome destruction already caused by chemotherapy. Fluoride is a known neurotoxin that accumulates in the pineal gland and bones. Heavy metals add to the toxic burden that a healing body must work to eliminate through already overtaxed detox pathways.
For drinking water, the gold standard for a cancer family is a home water distiller. Distillation removes virtually everything from water including chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues. We use and recommend the My Pure Water distiller in our home. Use code SEASON at checkout for 5% off. After distilling always add minerals back in using Quinton Isotonic minerals available through our Fullscript dispensary, since distillation removes everything.
For bathing and showering, chlorine is absorbed through the skin and inhaled through steam during a shower at levels that can actually exceed drinking exposure. Install a quality shower and bath filter as a minimum first step. Find our trusted recommendations in our Amazon bath and shower filter shop.
A whole house dechlorinating system is the long-term goal and removes chlorine, chloramines, and chemicals from every water source in your home simultaneously. If the upfront cost is a barrier, start with the drinking water distiller and shower filter and work toward a whole house system over time.
This one costs nothing and takes thirty minutes.
Indoor air quality is typically two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The toxins off-gassing from furniture, paint, carpet, electronics, and cleaning products accumulate inside a closed home and your family breathes them continuously. Opening your windows for a minimum of thirty minutes daily brings in fresh air, removes accumulated pollutants, and reduces condensation that can contribute to mold growth.
During warmer months, replace air conditioning with open windows whenever possible. The reduction in synthetic air circulation makes a meaningful difference in the daily toxic load your child’s respiratory system is managing.
Synthetic fragrance is one of the most significant and most underestimated sources of toxic exposure in the average home.
Over 95 percent of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum. These petroleum-derived chemicals are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, liver damage, and kidney stress. They are present in air fresheners, scented candles, plug-in diffusers, dryer sheets, cleaning products, and most conventional personal care products. The word fragrance on any ingredient label is a legal loophole that can represent hundreds of undisclosed synthetic chemicals.
Remove every synthetic fragrance product from your home and replace them with a high-quality essential oil diffuser and certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils. I only use and recommend doTERRA essential oils for their rigorous batch testing that guarantees no synthetics, no contaminants, and no inappropriate sourcing. Their oils are available at 25% off through our referral link.
For laundry, replace toxic dryer sheets with wool dryer balls. Add a few drops of your favorite pure doTERRA essential oil to the dryer balls for a clean, non-toxic fragrance that does not transfer petroleum chemicals directly onto the clothing that sits against your child’s skin all day.

According to the Environmental Working Group, 53 percent of conventional cleaning products contain carcinogens including formaldehyde and chloroform. Only seven percent of cleaning products adequately disclose their full contents on the label.
The products your family uses to clean the surfaces, floors, and fabrics of your home are depositing residues on every surface your child touches and breathes near every day. For a child in cancer treatment this is not acceptable.
Replace all conventional cleaning products with Branch Basics, which is one of the cleanest and most effective concentrate-based cleaning systems available. A single bottle of concentrate replaces every cleaning product in your home. It is truly non-toxic, fully disclosed, and extraordinarily effective. Use code SEASON for 15% off.
For DIY options, baking soda, white vinegar, and a few drops of doTERRA On Guard or Lemon essential oil clean virtually every surface in your home without any of the toxic burden.
What you cook in matters as much as what you cook with.
Aluminum cookware leaches aluminum, a known neurotoxin, into food. Non-stick coatings release perfluorooctanoic acid when heated, a compound linked to immune disruption and cancer. Plastic cooking utensils and storage containers leach hormone-disrupting chemicals, particularly when in contact with warm food.
Replace your cookware with stainless steel or cast iron options. All-Clad stainless steel and Le Creuset cast iron coated with porcelain enamel are both excellent, durable, genuinely non-toxic options. Replace all plastic food storage with glass containers. Replace plastic cooking utensils with stainless steel or wood. You can find my favorite options for non toxic cookware here!
This is one of the most beautiful and most accessible home detox strategies available.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which directly improves indoor air quality. Certain plants go further than basic oxygen production. The Snake Plant, also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, absorbs toxic gases including sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the air. A cactus plant placed near a computer or wireless router has been shown to absorb a significant portion of the EMF radiation being transmitted.
Place organic living plants throughout your home, particularly in your child’s bedroom where they spend many hours sleeping and recovering. The air quality improvement is real and the visual presence of living growing things in a healing space carries its own kind of medicine.
WiFi routers are one of the most significant sources of EMF radiation exposure in the average home and they are on continuously, delivering uninterrupted radiation exposure to every person in the house 24 hours a day.
Unplug your WiFi router every night before bed. This single habit eliminates eight or more hours of continuous EMF exposure daily and many families notice significantly improved sleep quality almost immediately.
Turn all smartphones and mobile devices to airplane mode at night. Keep devices out of your child’s bedroom entirely during sleep. Never place a laptop directly on your child’s body.
For additional EMF protection during waking hours, Aires Tech offers scientifically validated EMF protection technology for devices and living spaces. Use our link https://rstr.co/airestech/bw and code BIODYNAMIC for 30% off.
The skin is the body’s largest organ and it absorbs what is applied to it directly into the bloodstream within minutes. Conventional personal care products including shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunscreen, and makeup contain parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, and other endocrine-disrupting compounds that are applied to the skin and absorbed systemically every single day.
Use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database to evaluate every personal care product in your home. Remove anything scoring above a three on their toxicity scale and replace with clean alternatives.
For sunscreen specifically, replace oxybenzone-containing chemical sunscreens with non-nano zinc oxide mineral sunscreens. When it comes to deodorant, replace aluminum-containing antiperspirants with clean alternatives. Dental care should not contain fluoride or sugar! Our very favorite personal care brand is Primally Pure. My entire family uses their products! Use code SEASONJOHNSON10 for 10% off.
I know this list feels significant. It is significant. The toxic load inside the average home is genuinely significant and I do not want to minimize that.
However, I also know that overwhelm leads to paralysis and paralysis leads to nothing changing. So here is what I want you to do. Choose one item from this list today. Just one. Implement it completely. Then choose the next one.
Start with the water because it is the highest daily exposure point and the change with the most immediate and consistent impact. Then move to cleaning products because they affect air quality and surface contact simultaneously. Next address personal care products. Finally, cookware. Build from there.
Every swap compounds. Every change you make reduces the daily toxic burden your child’s healing body is working to process and eliminates sources of continued exposure that are actively working against their recovery.
You are not alone. I am so proud of you for showing up for your child in this way.

I LOVE using NORWEX! You just clean with microfiber and water. No chemicals. The Microfiber has silver embedded in it, which suffocate any bacteria left in the cloth after cleaning. The body cloth replaces, face wash, body wash, shaving cream, and exfoliating cream. The cloths have been proven to pick up 99% of bacteria from a surface and do not cross contaminate. I love that my kids can help clean and they feel so proud after they clean. I love that you can clean 90% of your home with just 2 different microfiber cloths and you can clean your entire face and body with just one body cloth. It saves you a ton of time and money and doesn’t expose you to any chemicals.
Hi Mandy! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂
Crunchi high performance makeup has been a game changer for me after the brain cancer diagnosis of my 2 year old daughter. It was the last thing for me to clean up because I was frustrated with the lack of performance in green beauty. It’s tbe absolute best foundation I have ever used and completely safe.
Love it!! Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂
Love Norwex :). A lot! I use oils at times too. Really depends when, what for, where I am etc! I don’t use many chemicals in any way shape or form BUT I’m also aware that, they can sorta be “hidden” as well…
Are the snake plants kid-safe?
🙂 Yes
Organic Rose Water is a lovely skin freshener or night time deodorant in summer. Also, organic Peppermint Oil is an excellent deodorant all year round. I use Steenbergs (Amazon) as comes in glass bottles. After time, unfortunately, the Peppermint Oil will stain underarms on light clothing. I then just lightly soak with environmentally-friendly bleach and they come up fine again. I use Sonnett Bleach, a German company. There may be others more enviro but haven’t had time to search.
Don’t laugh, but as a talc for my feet I’m using up fine out-of-date organic white flour. Can also be used as underarm talc but not when it’s really hot weather as it clumps 😊😊 yes, yes, OK, laugh 😊 xxx But it works!
