I know the fear and helplessness you're feeling—but I'm here to show you there's so much more you can do to help your child thrive. From one cancer parent to another: I'm here to show you your child can do more than just survive treatment.
I'm Season Johnson

I remember standing in the grocery store during Kicker’s treatment, watching a mom let her visibly sick child cough openly into the air near the produce section. My whole body tensed. I wanted to grab my cart and run.
Cold and flu season when your child is in cancer treatment is a different kind of fear. Learning how to keep your family healthy during cancer treatment is essential. It is not the ordinary parental worry about a week of missed school and a box of tissues. It is the fear of a fever that sends you to the emergency room. It is watching your child’s ANC drop because a sibling brought home a virus. It is lying awake at night wondering if you sanitized enough, isolated enough, did enough.
I know that fear intimately. I lived inside it for 3.5 years.
And I want to tell you something I desperately wish someone had told me in those early, terrifying days: you are not powerless here. Not even close.
The tools exist. The knowledge is available. And when you apply them consistently and intentionally, they work. Kicker maintained a normal ANC through 95% of his treatment. He was never hospitalized for an opportunistic infection. Our whole family stayed as healthy as we possibly could during one of the most vulnerable seasons of our lives. It was not luck. It was daily, intentional action.
This post is everything I know. I am handing it to you because I know what it feels like to need it.
Here is something your oncology team may not sit down and explain to you. Every immune system under your roof is now part of your child’s protection.
Chemotherapy kills everything in its path, including healthy immune cells. Radiation suppresses white blood cell counts alongside its effects on cancer cells. Your child’s immune system is already running at a significant deficit. That means the healthier every other person in your household is, the lower the infectious burden your child is exposed to every single day.
This realization was both sobering and empowering for me. I could not control what happened inside the treatment room. But I could control what happened inside our home. And so can you.
Your immune system is the only thing standing between your body and everything trying to attack it. When it is strong, viruses are not a threat. Bacteria are not a threat. Abnormal cells get destroyed before they become a problem. Building and protecting that immune terrain in your whole family is one of the most powerful things you can do for your cancer child right now.
Let me show you how.

Over 80% of immune function originates in the gut. What your family eats directly determines how effectively everyone’s immune system responds to threats. This is not abstract wellness advice. This is biology, and it matters enormously right now.
Cut sugar first. This is the single most impactful dietary change you can make during cold and flu season. Sugar suppresses immune function for up to 24 hours after a single serving. Refined carbohydrates do the same because the body metabolizes them identically to white sugar. One study showed that a single serving of refined carbohydrates dropped white blood cell counts for a full day. When your child’s counts are already compromised, keeping the whole household low on sugar is a genuine act of protection.
Increase healthy fat. Every cell in the body is surrounded by a membrane made of fat. That membrane is what keeps pathogens out and healthy function in. Feed it with grass-fed butter, tallow, coconut oil, avocado, and wild-caught fish. These fats maintain cellular integrity and give the immune system the raw materials it needs to do its job.
Add bone broth daily. Eight ounces per day supports gut lining repair, delivers bioavailable minerals, and provides the amino acids glycine and proline that immune function depends on. Make a large batch at the start of the week and keep it accessible.
Load up on organic vegetables. Leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and brightly colored produce deliver the vitamins and minerals your immune cells need most. Always pair them with a healthy fat to support proper mineral absorption.
Your body detoxes constantly through the skin, liver, lungs, and kidneys. During treatment and cold and flu season, supporting those pathways proactively keeps the immune system from becoming overwhelmed by more than it can handle.
These are the daily detox practices we kept consistent in our home throughout Kicker’s treatment:
Drink half your body weight in ounces of filtered water every day, up to 100 ounces. Water transports nutrients, flushes toxins, and keeps every detox organ functioning. Add 12 to 16 extra ounces for every cup of coffee or caffeinated beverage you consume.
Rebound daily. A mini trampoline moves the lymphatic system, which has no pump of its own and depends entirely on movement to circulate. Even five to ten minutes a day makes a measurable difference in lymphatic drainage and immune circulation.
Dry brush before showering to stimulate lymph flow and support the skin as a detox organ.
Take detox baths with Epsom salt and baking soda several times per week to support the body’s ability to draw toxins out through the skin.
Use a castor oil pack over the liver regularly to support liver detox pathways, especially during treatment when the liver is working overtime processing chemotherapy.
This is one of the most targeted and effective tools we have for protecting the respiratory system, and it is one of the least talked about.
Children receiving chemotherapy face an elevated risk of opportunistic bacteria developing in the lungs. Their suppressed immune systems cannot always mount a fast enough response. A nebulizer converts liquid substances into a fine mist and delivers them directly into the airways, right where the body needs support most. We use it preventatively throughout cold and flu season and at the very first sign of any respiratory symptom in anyone in the house.
I have written a full post on exactly how to use a nebulizer for immune support, including detailed instructions and everything you need to get started. Read it here.

Essential oils were a daily practice in our home throughout Kicker’s entire treatment, and I believe they played a significant role in how well he maintained his immune function. I want to share exactly what we used because I have seen these same protocols change outcomes for the families I work with.
I only recommend and use doTERRA essential oils because of their rigorous batch testing that guarantees no synthetics, no chemicals, and no inappropriate sourcing. This distinction matters. Poor quality oils can actually be contraindicated with chemotherapy. doTERRA oils are not.
A common fear I hear from parents is whether immune-supporting oils will overstimulate the immune system and interfere with treatment. The answer is no. These oils have a modulating effect. They bring the immune system into balance rather than driving it in one direction. For an overactive immune system they calm it down. For an underactive one they support it to work harder. They do not override the body. They work with it.
Blend 1: Topical Application on Feet and Over the Thymus Gland
For adults, use 3 drops of each oil three times per day or 5 drops twice per day. For children, use half the adult dose diluted well with fractionated coconut oil. For a 10ml roller bottle, add 10 drops of each oil for ages 5 to 9 and 5 drops for ages 2 to 4, then top with fractionated coconut oil. 10-15 drops for ages 10+.
Oils: Frankincense, Lemon, OnGuard, Oregano & Tea Tree
Blend 2: Internal for Ages 10 and Up, Topical for Younger Children
For adults, add 3 drops of each oil to a veggie capsule twice per day. For ages 9 and up, use 1 drop of each oil in a veggie capsule twice per day. For ages 5 to 8, add 8 drops of each oil to a 10ml roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply to feet twice daily. For ages 2 to 4 and infants, use 5 drops in a roller bottle and apply to feet twice daily.
Oils: Copaiba, Turmeric, Pink Pepper, Frankincense
The average home contains between 500 and 1,000 toxic chemicals. Many are invisible and odorless. During cold and flu season, when your family spends more time indoors, the toxic burden inside your home directly impacts every immune system under your roof.
This was one of the first things I tackled when Kicker was diagnosed. I went through our home room by room and removed everything I could not confidently call clean. It felt overwhelming at first. Then it felt empowering.
Start with cleaning products. Switch to Branch Basics or another truly clean concentrate and remove conventional sprays, bleach, and synthetic fragrances entirely. Turn off WiFi at night and use airplane mode on devices when not in use. Remove synthetic candles and plug-in air fresheners. Open windows when weather allows and use a quality air filter in your child’s bedroom. You can learn more about this right here.
I know you are exhausted. I know you are scared. I know the mental load of keeping a child alive through cancer treatment while also running a household and holding everyone else together is almost incomprehensibly heavy.
And I also know that your sleep and your stress levels directly affect your child’s safety. That is not said to add more pressure. It is said because it is true, and because you deserve to know that taking care of yourself is not selfish right now. It is essential.
Sleep is when the body repairs. Studies show that adequate sleep directly promotes T cell production, the arm of the immune system responsible for identifying and destroying infected cells. Seven to eight hours for adults is the minimum. Protect it fiercely. Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet. Shut down screens two to three hours before bed. Turn off WiFi at night. Go to bed at the same time every night and treat that routine as sacred.
I have an adrenal support protocol in my supplement shop that I designed specifically for parents of kids walking through this. You can grab it here!
For stress, your adrenal glands both respond to stress and protect immune function. When they are consumed by chronic fear and anxiety, which is the lived reality of a cancer parent, they cannot do their immune-protective job. Simple daily practices help. Prayer and meditation. Gratitude journaling. Time outside in fresh air. Deep breathing. Movement. Choose one and practice it today. Add another when you are ready.
Exercise is one of the most powerful and accessible immune tools available to your whole family. It increases circulation, moves the lymphatic system, improves mood, and directly strengthens immune response. You do not need a gym or a complicated routine to keep your family healthy during cancer treatment.
A daily walk in fresh air counts. A rebound session in the living room counts. A dance party in the kitchen with your kids absolutely counts. Sunshine drives vitamin D production, which plays a direct role in immune regulation. Get outside every single day, even for ten minutes.
Before you reach for Tylenol at the first sign of a fever, please pause. Acetaminophen depletes glutathione, one of the body’s most critical antioxidant and detox molecules. The brain depends on glutathione to reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative damage. Studies also indicate that children given more than one dose of acetaminophen face an increased risk of developing autoimmune disease.
Most over-the-counter cold and flu medications suppress symptoms without addressing root cause. They add toxic burden to immune systems that are already under significant stress. The natural tools in this post work better, and they support the body rather than burdening it further.
This is a lot. Please do not let the volume of it paralyze you. The families I work with who see the greatest results are not the ones who did everything perfectly from day one. They are the ones who picked one thing, did it consistently, and then added another.
So start here. This week, choose just one thing from each category to keep your family healthy during cancer treatment.
One nutrition change, such as cutting sugar or adding bone broth. One daily detox practice like filtered water or rebounding. One nebulizing session with saline or HOCl. One essential oil application. One environmental swap in your home.
Build from there. Every intentional step compounds. Every clean meal, every nebulizing session, every early bedtime is an act of love and protection for your child.
You are not powerless. You are not alone. And you are doing a more remarkable job than you know.
