I know the fear and helplessness you're feeling—but I'm here to show you there's so much more you can do to help your child thrive. From one cancer parent to another: I'm here to show you your child can do more than just survive treatment.
I'm Season Johnson

You made it to the final stretch of this series on transitioning to a whole food diet for kids with cancer and every healing body in your home.
If you missed the first two parts of this series, go back and read Part 1 here and Part 2 here before continuing. Each phase builds on the last and the foundation you laid in those first two steps is what makes everything in this post work most effectively.
Now let me say something to you directly before we dive in.
Two thirds of the way through this transition, most families are already noticing real changes. Better energy. Calmer digestion. A child who is tolerating treatment with more resilience than expected. Blood work that surprises the oncology team. These are not coincidences. They are the compounding result of every intentional choice you have made over the past weeks or months.
This is not easy, and I know that. But you are here, you are learning, and you are choosing differently for your child every single day. That is everything.
Do not stop now. Let us finish strong together.
And as always, this is a journey, not a destination. When you complete this final phase, go back to Phase 1 and begin again. Fine tune what needs refining. Deepen what you have already started. The process of learning and improving never ends, and that ongoing commitment is what creates true lifelong health.

The final two phases of this transition address two areas that most families overlook entirely: the quality of the animal protein your child is eating and the tools and environment in which that food is being prepared.
Both matter more than most people realize. A child eating clean, grass-fed, pasture-raised meat is receiving a fundamentally different nutritional input than a child eating conventionally raised commercial meat, even if the meal looks identical on the plate. And a child whose food is being prepared in a kitchen full of toxic cookware, chlorinated tap water, and microwave radiation is absorbing more than just nutrients with every meal.
For a child in cancer treatment whose body is working at its absolute limit, every source of additional toxic burden counts. Let us eliminate as many of them as possible.
Commercial meat is one of the most significant hidden sources of hormones, antibiotics, pesticide residues, and inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids in the standard American diet. For a child with cancer, these are inputs the body simply cannot afford.
Here is the nutritional reality. Animals raised in their natural environment eating the foods they were designed to eat have an ideal omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of approximately 1 to 1. Commercial chicken can have a ratio as high as 19 to 1, and commercial beef often reaches 6 to 1. This omega-6 dominance drives systemic inflammation, which is the exact metabolic environment that cancer thrives in.
Remove commercial meat from your kitchen and replace it with pasture-raised, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, and pesticide-free options. Our absolute favorite source for clean, regeneratively raised meat delivered directly to your door is Wild Pastures. The quality is exceptional and the sourcing is something I trust completely for my own family and for every cancer family I work with.
You do not need large quantities. Small amounts of quality meat provide far more nourishment than large amounts of commercial meat. Focus on quality over quantity every single time.
Wild-caught fish is one of the most anti-inflammatory protein sources available. However, not all fish is created equal and the sourcing decisions you make here matter significantly for a child in cancer treatment.
Always choose fresh, wild-caught fish from deep, clean, cold waters. Avoid farm-raised fish, which are subjected to antibiotics, unnatural feed, and conditions that compromise both their nutritional profile and their toxin load.
Limit or avoid entirely the following fish due to their high mercury and heavy metal content: swordfish, tuna, shark, tilefish, and king mackerel. For a child whose detox pathways are already burdened by chemotherapy, adding mercury from high-risk fish sources is counterproductive to everything you are working toward.
Prioritize smaller fish lower on the food chain instead. Sardines, wild Alaskan salmon, mackerel, anchovies, and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, low in heavy metals, and deeply supportive of the anti-inflammatory terrain you are working to create in your child’s body.
Also avoid fish caught off the coasts of large cities where surrounding waters carry higher levels of industrial pollutants. You can actually get great quality, wild caught seafood in the Wild Pasture’s subscription box too!

This step is one of the most powerful and most underutilized tools in a healing kitchen for kids with cancer.
Chemotherapy devastates the gut microbiome. Beneficial bacteria are wiped out, the gut lining becomes compromised, and the immune system, which is over 80% housed in the gut, loses much of its functional foundation. Rebuilding that microbiome through fermented and cultured foods is one of the most direct and effective ways to support immune recovery during and after treatment.
Start introducing small amounts of truly fermented foods into your child’s daily diet. True fermented sauerkraut and other lacto-fermented vegetables, whole milk yogurt from grass-fed animals, miso, and raw fermented condiments are all excellent starting points. Begin with very small amounts, even a teaspoon alongside a meal, and increase gradually as your child’s digestive system adjusts.
For families who want to dive deeper into fermentation and cultured foods, I highly recommend Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. This is a foundational resource that has shaped my practice and my approach to feeding a healing body.
I know this one might make you pause. However, please stay with me.
Research on microwave cooking reveals several deeply concerning findings that are especially relevant for children in cancer treatment. Microwave radiation has been shown to have unfavorable effects on the proteins and fats in food, altering their structure and making them more difficult for the body to assimilate. It causes changes in vitamin content and bioavailability, reducing the nutritional value of food at the exact moment your child needs maximum nutrition. Studies have also shown that regular consumption of microwaved food produces abnormal blood profiles similar to those seen in the early stages of cancer. Additionally, microwaved milk has been shown to alter amino acids in ways that can be toxic to the liver and nervous system, which is particularly concerning for infants and young children.
Remove it. If your microwave is a countertop model, take it out and use that space for a display of your favorite real food cookbooks. That is exactly what we did in our home and I have never missed it.
What you cook in matters as much as what you cook. Aluminum cookware leaches aluminum into food, which is a known neurotoxin and a compound that adds burden to an already taxed detox system. Non-stick coatings release toxic compounds when heated, including perfluorooctanoic acid, which has been linked to immune disruption and cancer.
Replace your cookware with stainless steel or cast iron options. All-Clad is an excellent stainless steel option. Le Creuset cast iron coated with porcelain enamel is another outstanding choice that is durable, non-toxic, and genuinely beautiful in a kitchen. These are investments that will last decades and pay dividends in reduced toxic exposure every single day.
Also replace plastic food storage containers with glass. Plastic leaches hormone-disrupting chemicals, particularly when food is warm. Glass is inert, non-toxic, and keeps food fresher longer. I have an entire section in my Amazon shop with all my favorite kitchen tools!
Water is the foundation of every biological process in the body. It transports nutrients, flushes toxins, supports detoxification, and makes up the majority of your child’s blood volume. The quality of the water your family drinks and bathes in matters deeply.
Chlorine and chloramines in municipal tap water disrupt the gut microbiome by killing beneficial bacteria the same way they kill pathogens. For a child whose microbiome is already devastated by chemotherapy, daily exposure to chlorinated water adds insult to significant injury. Fluoride, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues present in most municipal water supplies add further burden to a body that is already working overtime to detox.
For drinking water, the gold standard is distilled water. Distillation removes virtually everything from water including chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues, leaving you with the purest possible base. We use and recommend the My Pure Water distiller in our home. Use code SEASON at checkout for 5% off. After distilling, we always add minerals back in using Quinton Isotonic minerals or a clean trace mineral drops, since distillation removes everything including beneficial minerals. You can find Quinton minerals in our Fullscript dispensary.
For bathing, chlorine is absorbed through the skin and inhaled through steam during a shower at levels that can actually exceed what is consumed through drinking the same water. This means your child’s bath and shower water deserves just as much attention as their drinking water. Install a quality shower or bath filter as a minimum first step. You can find our trusted bath and shower filter recommendations in our Amazon shop here.
A whole house dechlorinating system remains an excellent long-term investment and removes chlorine, chloramines, and other chemicals from every water source in your home simultaneously. If the upfront cost is a barrier right now, start with the drinking water distiller and a shower filter and work toward a whole house system over time. Every upgrade you make reduces the daily toxic burden on your child’s already stressed body.

Six phases. Months of intentional, courageous choices for your child and your family. You walked away from the standard American diet and toward something that has stood the test of time across every traditional culture that prioritized it.
Friend, what you are doing matters. Every intentional choice you have made through this series is worth it. Keep going.
This is not the end. Go back to Phase 1 and begin the cycle again. Fine tune what still needs work. Deepen what is already working. Bring in a practitioner who can help you personalize this foundation for your child’s specific needs and protocol.

Hi Season!
I’m curios to know what your take is on drinking vinegars like Braggs? Also I see some eggs with added Omegas. What is that about? I always look for Organic, Free Range but this Omega stuff is confusing. Is it good, is it bad? How does it get added to the eggs? Is it something fed to the chickens, and if so is that still organic? Thanks for all you do! Blessings to you and your family!
Hi Sandi – Yes, we love Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar, and it’s great for supporting digestion. And as far as the eggs, I recommend organic pastured eggs that come from free range chickens. I don’t purchase the ones with added omegas. You can also get great omega 3s from pastured/organic/grass-fed meats, wild caught fish, raw butter/milk/cream, ghee and duck fat. I hope that helps!
